Competitor price monitoring: complete guide for Romanian retailers

Competitor price monitoring is no longer an optional advantage for Romanian retailers — it is increasingly a necessity. On eMAG Marketplace and Altex, prices can change very often, sometimes several times a day. A retailer who does not systematically track the competition can lose sales without knowing why.

Why price monitoring is no longer optional

Major retailers adjust their prices frequently, especially in competitive categories such as electronics, appliances and IT. If your price is a few percent above the competition and you don't know it, you risk losing orders and the most visible position on the product page. eMAG does not publish the exact Buy Box criteria, but your price relative to other sellers is generally one of the factors taken into account.

Manual monitoring is impossible at scale. A mid-sized retailer with 500 products and 5 competitors has 2,500 prices to check daily. An automated system does this work in the background, without effort, and delivers only the information that matters: where you are more expensive and by how much.

What data a price intelligence system collects

  • Current price with exact timestamp — you know at what time the price was changed, not just that it changed.
  • The price history we keep — every successful check stores a snapshot, so you identify trends and seasonality instead of reacting to noise.
  • Competitor stock availability — a competitor out of stock is no longer a real threat for that product.
  • The price as displayed — the price and currency shown on the page are recorded, with no currency conversion and no VAT or shipping adjustments; keep these differences in mind when comparing.

The data collected and the decision each one supports

Data collectedWhy it matters
Current price with timestampYou know at what time the price changed, not just that it changed.
Price historyYou spot trends and seasonality instead of reacting to noise.
Competitor stockA competitor out of stock is no longer a real threat on that product.
Displayed priceYou compare what a shopper sees on the page; shipping, VAT and currency conversion are not included, so you check them separately.

How a price intelligence system works technically

A price intelligence system periodically reads retailers' public pages, starting from the URL of each product. Some shops have dedicated parsers; for the rest, the structured data on the page is read (for example JSON-LD or price meta tags), on a best-effort basis — if the page does not expose the price, the result has no price, and some shops block automated access. Checks run on a scheduled interval (in 4pricing, every 6 hours by default), and every successful check is stored with a timestamp and presented as a chart or comparison table.

From data to decision: what you do with price information

  • Relative position — are you the cheapest, in the middle of the market, or premium? You decide consciously, not by chance.
  • Price trend — is the price of the competitor you track rising or falling over the history of recent weeks?
  • Margin opportunities — when competition raises prices, you have a window to win sales without lowering your price.
  • Sales risks — you identify the products where you are more expensive than the competition and where you may already be losing orders.

Automatic vs assisted repricing: what to choose

Automatic repricing writes the recommended price straight into the shop, within the margin limits you set. Assisted repricing shows you the suggestion and you approve it. 4pricing works in assisted mode by default: it calculates the recommended price (for example a percentage below the cheapest competitor, at the median level, or as a margin over cost, never going below your cost) and shows it in the panel and in the comparison available through the API, and once you approve it the price reaches your system through a signed webhook (you apply it and confirm through the API) or is written directly to shops built on 4buildsite and 4shopy. It does not write to marketplaces and has no ERP connectors. For large catalogs there is also an automatic level, off by default, that applies prices on its own only inside the limits you set (maximum change, actions per day, minimum margin).

Conclusion: audit your current position

Before any repricing decision, audit where you stand against the competition on the most important 20% of your products, the ones that usually generate most of your sales. Those deserve a short check interval; the rest of the catalog can run on a wider one. In 4pricing the interval is set per product, and the minimum depends on the plan (the technical floor is one hour), so you keep the short cadence exactly where it pays off. To get started, you add products by URL or import a list of URLs from a CSV (up to 2,000 rows per import), then group your product with the competitor listings you add yourself and see your position against the cheapest one.
