Retailer Price Alerts: How to Know in Time When Competitors Change Prices

Price alerts for retailers: how to find out in time when the competition changes their price

In online retail, reaction speed is a competitive advantage. A retailer who checks the prices of key products on a schedule and gets an alert when the main competitor has lowered their price can decide in good time whether to adjust their offer. The price alert system is the difference between reacting in time and finding out about the problem from next week's sales report. Alerts are not real-time: they are evaluated at each scheduled check, so the maximum delay is the check interval you choose.

Available alert types

  • Price-below alert: notification when the price of a tracked product drops below the threshold you set.
  • Price-above alert: notification when the tracked price rises above the threshold you set, useful when a competitor raises their price and leaves you room.
  • Percentage-drop alert: notification when the price falls by at least X% compared with the previous check.
  • Back-in-stock alert: notification when a product that was unavailable becomes available again.
  • Group alerts: in a group that holds your product and the competitor listings you added, you get an alert when a competitor undercuts you by at least X% or when you have lost the lowest price in the group.

Optimal check frequency

Check intervals you can set per product, by category (suggestions)

CategorySuggested intervalReason
Flagship electronics (iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, premium laptops)As often as your plan allowsVolatile prices, intense competition
Mid-range electronics and ITEvery 4 to 6 hoursBalance between coverage and credit usage
Home appliancesEvery 8 to 12 hoursMore stable prices, rarer changes
Accessories and consumablesDailyLow impact of delay, low monitoring cost

How checks and credits work

Checks run on a schedule, not continuously: the default interval is 6 hours and you can change it per product. The minimum interval depends on your plan, and the technical floor is one hour. Each successful check uses one credit, and new accounts get 100 free credits; when credits run out, automatic monitoring pauses. A failed check records no price and costs no credit. That is why it pays to vary the intervals: check often only the products where speed matters.

Webhook or the alert inbox: which channel to choose

  • E-mail, SMS, WhatsApp: these are not delivery channels for 4pricing alerts. If you need them, use the webhook to trigger notifications from your own systems; trade-off: it takes a little code from your team.
  • Webhook: the alert is sent to a URL (HTTP endpoint) that you provide, signed with HMAC-SHA256, with retries on failure; it fires only on alert events, not on every price change. What happens next depends on code written by your team; 4pricing has no native connectors.
  • The in-app alert inbox: every trigger stays on record, with an unread counter. Useful for reviewing in bulk what happened overnight, not for immediate reaction.

Noise filtering: how to avoid being overwhelmed by notifications

A large catalog checked often can generate many alerts. Without filtering, the system becomes unusable. The practical rule: set alerts only for the products that matter most in sales and use thresholds that correspond to a real price change, not minor fluctuations. An alert is one-time by default, and you can make it recurring with a pause between notifications (24 hours by default), so the same product does not ping you at every check. The rest of the catalog can be followed in the statistics panel and in the group verdicts, without individual alerts.

Alerts in your ERP: a link your team builds

An advanced way to use price alerts is to connect them to your ERP or inventory management system. 4pricing has no native ERP connector: through the webhook it sends the alert data to a URL that you configure, and your developer (or your ERP vendor's) writes the endpoint that receives it. There it can, for example, create a review task for a manager. In 4pricing you also get a recommended price per group, which you approve in the app; through the signed webhook (price.apply) you receive the approved price at the same endpoint, apply it on your e-commerce platform and confirm through the API. The only direct application, without your system, is on shops built on 4buildsite and 4shopy.
