Price intelligence guide for Romanian retailers 2026

Price intelligence is a retailer's ability to collect, analyse, and act on competitor price data. On the Romanian e-commerce market, where competitor prices change often, lacking a price intelligence system means sales losses that never show up in standard reports. This guide covers the full spectrum: from basic concepts to the difference between a recommended price that you apply yourself and automatic repricing, with examples from stores such as eMAG, Altex, and Flanco.

What is price intelligence and why it matters

Price intelligence combines price monitoring, price history analysis, and algorithm-based price recommendations into a single system. Unlike simple monitoring (which tells you where you are more expensive), price intelligence also tells you by how much you need to change your price to hit the chosen strategy: margin over cost, alignment with the market median, or undercutting the cheapest tracked shop.

On eMAG Marketplace, price is one of the factors that matter for the Buy Box, but eMAG does not publish the exact criteria, and price alone does not guarantee winning it. A seller who does not track competitors learns late that a competitor has overtaken them on a popular product. Price intelligence does not guarantee the Buy Box, but it shows you in good time where you stand against the market.

How a price intelligence system works

  1. Data collection: at the scheduled interval, the product pages you added by link are read — with dedicated parsers for eMAG, Altex, Flanco, and PC Garage and a best-effort generic parser for any other public page — and the system extracts the current price, currency, and stock status.
  2. Normalisation: each tracked product is the exact product page you added yourself at each store, so you compare like with like. You do the matching between your product and competitor listings manually, in a product group.
  3. Analysis and recommendation: the algorithm calculates your position against the competitor listings in the group (minimum, median, average) and generates a recommended price taking into account your configured cost floor and chosen strategy — undercut, match the market median, or margin over cost.
  4. Action: the recommended price is calculated by the algorithm and you decide whether to apply it in your store or marketplace; the data can also be pulled via the API, and the product list can be exported as CSV.
  5. Continuous monitoring: the system repeats the cycle at the interval set for each product (every 6 hours by default, within your plan limits) and updates recommendations as competitors change prices.

The five stages of the cycle, from collection to repeat

StageWhat happens
Data collectionAt the scheduled interval, price, currency and stock are read from the pages you added.
NormalisationEach tracked product is the exact product page you added yourself; you do the matching manually, in a group.
Analysis and recommendationThe algorithm returns a recommended price, given your cost floor and strategy.
ActionYou apply the recommended price yourself; the data can also be pulled via the API, and the product list can be exported as CSV.
Continuous monitoringThe cycle repeats at the interval set for each product.

Price monitoring: the foundation of any price intelligence system

Price monitoring is the first layer of price intelligence. Without clean, up-to-date competitor data, any analysis or recommendation is incorrect. The 4pricing system checks prices at a scheduled interval, per product — every 6 hours by default, with the minimum depending on your plan — on the product pages you add by link, from any public online store. Keyword search exists only for eMAG, Altex, Flanco, PC Garage, Evomag, and Cel.ro; for other stores you add the product link. Prices are shown as recorded, with no currency conversion and no handling of VAT or shipping, and pages are read as our servers in Romania see them, so stores that vary price or availability by visitor country may show something different.

Automatic repricing: from monitoring to action

Automatic repricing transforms monitoring data into price actions. The basic rules are simple: if competitor X is cheaper and my price reduced by 0.01 lei still maintains the configured minimum margin, the price updates automatically in the store or on the marketplace. In practice, rules can be much more sophisticated: keep the price higher if the competitor is out of stock, or stop repricing below a certain threshold regardless of competition. Note: 4pricing does not work this way by default and does not write to marketplaces. It calculates the recommended price and you decide: after your approval the price goes to your system through a signed webhook or directly to shops built on 4buildsite and 4shopy. There is also an automatic level, off by default, that applies prices only inside the limits you set (maximum change, actions per day, minimum margin).

Pricing strategy: more than the lowest price

The biggest risk of aggressive repricing without strategy is the deflationary spiral: all sellers keep lowering the price until the margin disappears. The right pricing strategy defines clear objectives by product segment — for example, the best possible position on high-turnover products, but with the margin protected by a cost floor; alignment with the market median on seasonal products; and a fixed price, without tracking competitors, on unique or exclusive products. Any effect on the eMAG Buy Box remains uncertain, since eMAG does not publish the exact criteria.

The technical link: the API and your own systems

A price intelligence system should not stay isolated from the rest of your operations. 4pricing has no native connectors to an ERP, feeds, or marketplaces and does not send prices to those systems. The only link is the REST API: your system can push your own prices (with no scraping and no credits) and read the history and the comparison with competitors, and a developer can build the desired flow on top of them. Applying the recommended price in your ERP, feed, or marketplace remains your own step.

Common mistakes in price intelligence implementation

  • Applying recommendations without minimum margin limits — major risk of selling at a loss; that is why the recommended price should respect a cost floor.
  • Comparing with out-of-stock competitor products — the price of an out-of-stock product is not a real competitive reference.
  • Check frequency too low for volatile categories — one check per day can miss changes during the day, for example in electronics; choose an interval that suits the category, within your plan limits.
  • Treating the monitored price as the final price — the collected data holds the displayed price, currency, stock status and check timestamp, so anything added at checkout (shipping, VAT) has to be confirmed in the store's cart before you move your own price.
  • Lack of segmentation by product type — the same strategy on all products in a heterogeneous catalog (own products + resell + seasonal) produces suboptimal results.

How 4pricing helps

4pricing provides an integrated price intelligence system: scheduled checks, per product, at the interval you set (6 hours by default, with the minimum set by your plan), on pages added by link, with keyword search across eMAG, Altex, Flanco, PC Garage, Evomag and Cel.ro; stored price history and evolution charts; comparison groups with minimum, median, your position and a verdict; recommended prices based on configurable rules (minimum margin, rounding and one of three strategies: undercut by a percentage, match the median, or margin over cost), which you apply yourself; alerts for a price below or above a value, a percentage drop, back in stock, or a competitor undercutting you, delivered in the app or through a signed webhook; and a REST API that your team can use to build a link to your own systems (there are no native connectors). New accounts get 100 free credits, and one credit equals one price check.
