Pricing strategy for Romanian retailers: from cost-plus to market-based pricing

Most Romanian retailers start with a cost-plus strategy: add a fixed percentage to the purchase cost and that is the selling price. This approach is simple but leaves money on the table — or worse, makes you uncompetitive without knowing it. A market data-based pricing strategy helps you protect margin where you can and stay competitive where you must.

Cost-plus vs value-based vs competitive pricing

Pricing strategy comparison

StrategyHow it worksAdvantagesRisks
Cost-plusCost + fixed marginSimple, predictableIgnores the market, you can be too expensive or too cheap
Value-basedPrice based on customer perceived valueMaximizes margin on differentiationHard to quantify in mass retail
Competitive pricingPrice based on position vs competitionReflects the real market, supports volumeRequires regular monitoring

How to define your positioning

  • Price leader: you are intentionally the cheapest on key categories. Requires high volumes and low operating costs.
  • Middle market: you are competitive but not the cheapest — you compensate through services, faster delivery or extended warranty.
  • Premium: higher price justified by brand, curated product selection or exclusive services (installation, after-sales support).

Catalog segmentation: traffic products vs margin products

Not all products have the same strategic importance. Traffic products (popular flagships, high-demand categories) are those clients compare intensely and where the price must be highly competitive. Margin products are less compared, where the client has already decided to buy from you and you can maintain better margin. A clear catalog segmentation lets you apply different pricing rules: aggressive on traffic products, conservative on margin products. In 4pricing you can choose the recommended-price strategy for each group: a percentage below the lowest competitor price, aligned to the median, or starting from cost plus a minimum margin. You approve the recommendation, and the price reaches your system through a signed webhook (or directly on 4buildsite and 4shopy shops); on your marketplace the update is made by you or by your system.

Demand elasticity: when lowering prices helps and when it hurts

High-elasticity products (for example entry-level laptops or mid-range phones) usually see sales rise more noticeably when the price drops. Low-elasticity products (consumables, niche accessories) do not significantly increase volume with price reductions — you cut margin without volume gains. Real elasticity can only be learned from your own sales. The price history in 4pricing, set next to your sales history, helps you see which products reacted to a competitor price move in orders and where a more aggressive price is worth it.

How to use competition history as strategy input

  • Identify seasonal patterns: the competitor price history shows whether electronics prices drop in certain periods, for example around new model launches or big campaigns.
  • Spot promotions: a price that rises ahead of a campaign and then drops may indicate a prepared promotion. Alerts on a percentage drop versus the previous check tell you when the reduction appears.
  • Measure the reaction to your price moves: after you change your price, watch the following checks to see whether and how the competition responds. Checks run on a schedule (every 6 hours by default), so you see the reaction at that granularity, not in real time.
